PRESIDENT’S SPEECH ON ICU DAY, OCTOBER 20TH, 2011 


My fellow Belizeans, in particular credit union member-owners. A Happy International Credit Union Day!  I appreciate your taking the time today to celebrate the credit union difference and to recognize the contributions that credit unions make every day to the lives of member-owners, their families, and their communities worldwide.

Beginning in 1948, credit unions have come together annually on the third Thursday in October to commemorate the credit union movement’s history and achievements. This year, a global committee of event organizers has chosen the theme “Credit Unions Build a Better World” to anchor the celebration. 

“Credit Unions Build a Better World” celebrates the important economic and social contributions credit unions make to their communities worldwide that inspire 188 million people from around the world to choose credit unions for accessible financial services. This year, cooperatively owned and controlled credit unions are aligned with the greater cooperative business sector and the United Nations as they launch the International Year of Cooperatives 2012 on October 31ST, 2011.

Belize Credit Unions History

The Credit Union (CU) Movement in Belize was started in 1943 by a coalition of 32 individuals.  The pioneer of the movement was Father Marion Ganey, who believed that people have the responsibility to solve their economic and social problems.

The Belize Credit Union League Limited (BCUL) was established in 1956 under section 80 of the Laws of Belize.

A Credit Union is a group of people who pool their monies to assist each other financially.  Thus, the main objective of a Credit Union is to assist its shareholders with their financial needs.  One of the most important opportunities that Credit Unions offer is the opportunity for shareholders to own and manage their financial institution.
