EVANGEL CREDIT UNION

HISTORY


The history of the establishment and growth of our Evangel Credit Union in Belize City, Belize, is one of vision, faith, dedication and commitment.
The vision of a Christian-based savings and credit/financial institution, was conjured up in the minds of Rev. and Mrs. Williams, Pastors of Belize City - First Church of the Nazarene, around the mid 1980's. The Williams shared their vision with a few friends including Mr. Dwight Tillett, Agapito Canto, George Frazer and the late Mr. Leonardo Luna, Roy Rivers, among others. The idea took root and soon spread to the members and friends of the Belize Association of Evangelical Churches. The Department of Co¬operatives and Credit Unions in Belize was then contacted and soon a series of credit union education and training classes began, mostly at nights at Nazarene High School in Belize City. A team headed by the then Registrar, Mr. Keith Wright and including Ms. Angela Reneau and Miss Ethelvina Cuthkelvin, conducted classes for the dozen or so persons, who were among the twenty founding members of our Evangel Credit Union Ltd.
Having completed the course of preparation, research and study, we submitted our application for formal registration to the Registrar and were subsequently registered as a credit union on 30th June 1988 with 20 members and assets of $9,000 in shares. Thus  was the establishment of the Evangel Credit Union Ltd.
Our development and growth have been steady and carefully chartered; guided under strict and dedicated management, with grateful assistance and support from the Department of Co-operatives and Credit Unions and the management of St. John's Credit Union.
We have now grown to a proud and flourishing, financial institution today with assets of over a million dollars blessed and directed by the hands of Almighty God, and the dedicated leadership of a long cadre of officers from our Board of Directors and our Credit and Supervisory Committees over these past 16 years (To God be the Glory!) We have all seen, shared and benefited from the good services of our credit union and especially from the long and dedicated services of all its past presidents and officers and especially to our Treasurer-Manager, Mrs. Maizie Williams. To one and all who have contributed to the growth and success of our Evangel Credit Union, we are eternally grateful, and we look forward to your continued support and success.
